Ed Carmo began teaching in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1966. The Learning Center Units were developed while teaching in American international schools overseas. These are independent schools that are sponsored by the American Embassy and the Ambassador in their host countries. Ed taught in Sao Paulo, London, Lisbon, and Yaounde in Cameroon. He has a BA in Geography and an MS in Environmental Education.
His first experience with learning center units was at the American School in London where teams of middle school teachers developed materials and tasks for teaching reading, math, science, and social studies. Learning centers accommodate both independent and cooperative learning.
The history units being offered on this website were written when Ed taught social studies and world history at the American School of Yaounde in Cameroon. They are meant to be supplementary to the text for grades 6 - 10 and each require about ten class periods to complete.
